ABOUT

Walking Football is so much fun!

It gets you active, it gets you thinking strategically, it gets you involved in teamwork and you get to make friends with like-minded people.

You can play in a mixed team, women only, men only, even as a family.

Teams are six-a-side with up to three substitutes.

No running, no pushing and shoving, no tackling, no tripping and the ball can’t go above head height.

The fields are smaller than traditional soccer/football fields and the games are shorter, so you don’t have to be super-fit when you start.

HOW DID IT BEGIN?

Unlike traditional football that was first recognised as a sport in England back in 1863, Walking Football has only been around since 2011. It’s a new millennium concept that was devised by John Croot and the Chesterfield Football Club.

Lots of die-hard footballers thought the players were joking when they said they did Walking Football. That was, until the Barclays Bank Digital Eagles campaign was aired on TV in 2014. The adverts emphasised the benefits of Walking Football and, suddenly, people started to pay attention.

Within a decade, Walking Football spread throughout the UK and Europe and it’s now played in over 80 countries around the world.

For the 2025/26 season, the Walking Football Association (WFA) has listed over 3,100 affiliated clubs (according to their data) and it’s been reported that, in England, more than 60 000 people play Walking Football on a regular basis.

WALKING FOOTBALL JOBURG

Walking Football was played actively in Joburg until COVID brought everything to a standstill. Now, six years on, we’ve decided it’s time to get our walking boots back on.

We are affiliated with Walking Football South Africa (Est 2017) which is based in Cape Town and the Laudium Walking Football Association located south-west of Pretoria.

Our home base is at the Randburg Sports Complex, although we also play at various other venues around the city.
